Mythical Ways to Celebrate Love on Valentines Day

Valentine's Day is overrated.

Not how you thought I'd start this blog post, eh?

Well (in my opinion) it doesn't make sense for whimsical and romantic displays of affection should be reserved to just one day a year.

If you're in a loving healthy relationship then every day should feel like it's Valentine's Day.

Plus, it's been waaay too over-commercialised by white collar corporations trying to push teddy bears, chocolates, and roses at eye-watering prices.

Valentine's Day has inevitably lost it's fairytale charm in the modern world.

But... for singletons and long-term couples, Valentine's Day can act as a time for reflection and setting goals/intentions - similar to New Years Day, but with a stronger focus on Love.

It acts as an annual reminder to keep the spark of romance alive.

And to continue to keep the flame of love burning bright year-upon-year.

Continue reading below to delve into some enchanting and mythical ways to celebrate Valentine's Day (and every other day of the year πŸ˜‰).

Fairytale Romance

One way to revive your romantic life is to go back to the celebrations & mythical origins of love in mythology and folklore.

Tales of true love that can defy the odds. (Such as Buttercup and Westley in 'The Princess Bride')

Legends of a romance that's worth journeying to the depths of Hell for. (Such as Orpheus and Eurydice in Greek Mythology)

Fairytales of being saved by your Knight in shining armour. (Such as 'Sleeping Beauty' by the Brother's Grimm)

These stories of love may be cheesy and clichΓ©, but they act a important reminders that you will find your person, and being with them will feel like utter magic.

In each story you'll find passion, hope, endurance, sacrifice and reward.

Each character will have their own individual quirks and flaws, but when they are together with their one true love, they make perfect sense.

Adjusting your perception of love, by using fairytales and myths as an example, means that you won't settle for less than you deserve.

You are the princess of your own story!

On Valentines we wear Pink

Like an artist with a paintbrush, paint the colours of love into your life.

Incorporate the below list of colours into what you wear, how you decorate your home, food and treats, even potential date ideas:

  • Red (scarlet, burgundy, crimson, maroon, ruby, cherry, etc.)
  • Pink (blush, rose, rouge, ballerina, carnation, peach, macaroon, etc.)
  • White (snow, pearl, seashell, cotton, silk, ivory, porcelain, etc.)
  • Gold (medallion, amber, honey, sunflower, champagne, rose gold, etc.)

Be creative with how you express yourself and invite the love in.

Love in the Mirror

In the famous wise words of RuPaul Charles: "If you can't love yourself, then how the hell you gon' love somebody else?" - Amen.

When you next take a look in the mirror, be mindful.

Don't glance for a quick outfit check.

Instead, take the time to really look at your reflection, into your eyes, and see the wonderful person that you are.

Not many people take the time to do this, perhaps because of the fear of not being able to love the person looking back at them, or the fear of appearing vain (like Narcissus with his own reflection).

But this is exactly why you need to look at yourself more deeply and compassionately, and remind yourself that you are deserving of love.

You are beautiful. In every way.

When you love yourself, you are more accepting of the love you deserve.
